State Sen. Tim Kennedy (D) is running against Republican challenger Anthony Malecki, a Buffalo attorney.

BUFFALO, NY — Democratic incumbent Tim Kennedy and Republican challenger Anthony Malecki are vying for New York’s 26th Congressional District, which represents more than 770,000 people and covers parts of Niagara and Erie counties. are.

The district includes the cities of Buffalo, Lackawanna, Niagara Falls, Tonawanda, and North Tonawanda. The average age of residents is 38 years old, and the median household income is $61,957 as of 2022.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives can, among other things, introduce bills and resolutions, introduce amendments, and serve on various committees.

In April, Tim Kennedy won the seat in a special election after it had been vacated by former Congressman Brian Higgins, who decided to leave Congress before the end of his term citing frustration with Washington’s dysfunction. He currently works as president and CEO of Sears Performing Arts Center.

Kennedy is once again running as the favorite in the dark blue district. Republican candidate Anthony Malecki is not actively campaigning.

Who is who?

Kennedy is a Democrat and a representative of the Working Families Party. He attended St. Joseph’s University and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in occupational therapy. He spent 11 years treating geriatric and pediatric patients.

He was elected to the House of Representatives on April 30 after a special election to replace Mr. Higgins. Kennedy serves on the House Homeland Security Committee and is assigned to two subcommittees: Emergency Management and Technology, and Transportation and Maritime Security.

Mr. Malecki is a Republican and represents the Conservative Party. He is running for Supreme Court Justice of the 12th Judicial District in 2021. According to BallotPedia.org, Malecki earned his bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State University in 1999 and his law degree from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 2003. His career includes work as an insurance professional and attorney. According to his LinkedIn page, he works as a loss analyst at Merchants Insurance Group.

According to Kennedy’s website, President Kennedy banned assault weapons and modified devices, passed universal background checks for all firearm purchases, strengthened red flag laws, and prohibited the sale of ghost guns and high-capacity ammunition. He is advocating for common-sense gun violence prevention laws that would ban gun violence. . Kennedy also mentions climate change legislation in his book.

Malecki currently works as an attorney in the City of Buffalo. He did not campaign for a seat in the U.S. Congress. 2 On Your Side reached out to Erie County Republican Party Chairman Michael Cracker for comment on the candidates. There was no immediate response.

election day

The choice for U.S. House District 26 will be decided on the next ballot in 2024. Early voting will take place from October 26th to November 3rd, with the official election day being Tuesday, November 5th.
