TAMPA, Fla. — One of the biggest races in Florida heading into the 2024 general election is the U.S. Senate race.
Incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Scott is seeking re-election for the first time since taking office in 2019. Democratic former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel Powell is seeking to unseat Scott.
Scott narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson, the current NASA administrator, in the 2018 election.

Senator Rick Scott (Republican)
Before entering politics in 2010, Sen. Rick Scott, 71, was the CEO of the world’s largest healthcare company, now known as HCA Healthcare, before becoming a venture capitalist.
He ran for governor of Florida in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014. In 2018, he narrowly defeated incumbent Bill Nelson to become Florida’s next senator.
Scott’s campaign website says that during his tenure as governor, he “worked every day to make Florida a great place to find a job, raise a family, and start a business.”

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (Democrat)
Debbie Mucarsel Powell, 53, served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Florida’s 26th Congressional District before running for the U.S. Senate. She was elected in 2018 but lost re-election in 2020.
Before entering politics, he was a faculty member in the School of Health Sciences at Florida International University.
Mucarsel-Powell immigrated to the United States from Ecuador as a child, according to his campaign website.
