Neighbors help thwart Wilmington kidnapping attempt
When an 11-year-old girl was grabbed by a man on her way home from school in Wilmington, Yvonne, a neighbor who was watching, yelled to scare the man.
LOS ANGELES – The search continues for a man suspected of trying to kidnap an 11-year-old girl in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call in the Wilmington area on October 15th at approximately 3:15 p.m. Police at the scene were told the girl was walking near M Street and Gulf Avenue when the suspect was described as a man, possibly in his 20s or 20s. A woman in her 30s approached her from behind and fondled her inappropriately.
A good Samaritan who lived in the area noticed what was happening and jumped in to stop it.
“Hey, leave her alone,” said Yvonne, the good Samaritan.
The man apparently told Yvonne that it was her niece. The good Samaritan said he knew better.
Yvonne and her brother tried to apprehend the suspect, who is described as 5-foot-10 and weighs about 240 pounds, but the suspect fled in a gray Nissan Kicks.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a press release that the Nissan the attempted kidnapping suspect was driving had a spare wheel mounted on the rear passenger side.
Yvonne, a longtime Wilmington resident, told FOX 11 she was glad she was home folding laundry at the time of the incident.
“Honestly, today was a really good day,” she said.
