TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Station) – The power of the U.S. Senate is at stake this November. Democrats hope to use Florida to maintain control of the evenly divided Senate. The race between Sen. Rick Scott and former Miami state Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is raising millions of dollars.

“Floridians are hurting. They’re struggling with the high cost of living,” Mucarsel-Powell said.

Mucarsel-Powell hopes to unseat Rick Scott in the Senate in a state where there are 1 million more registered Republicans than Democrats. The former Democratic congressman from Miami served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She aims to return to the Senate to help the economy and Florida families.

“We need to look at ways to bring businesses in. One of the things I’m looking at is, for example, bringing businesses here in the Sunshine State that make solar panels, so we can really bring the state to the It’s going to create manufacturing, it’s going to bring good-paying jobs. There’s a lot we can do,” Mucarsel-Powell said.

Florida Politics:

Sen. Scott also said he will bring new jobs to Florida for a thriving economy. But he said more action is needed by Congress.

“If we want to reduce inflation, we have to balance the budget. We have to put people back to work. More than 50 million Americans between the ages of 16 and 64 don’t have a job. When they get back to work, our incomes will increase, our economy will improve, and our families will be better off,” said Florida Sen. Scott (R).

But Mucarsel-Powell argues that Floridians are no better off with Scott in Washington, D.C. She blamed Scott for the state’s property insurance crisis since his time as governor. She said she supports federal legislation to fix that.

“I want to lead this bill that lowers insurance premiums by 25 percent, but we also need to look at ways to attract businesses to our Sunshine State, so we can bring manufacturing to our state. It will bring in high-paying jobs and high-paying jobs,” Mucarsel-Powell said.

Scott said property and casualty insurance is primarily a state issue, and he appreciated the reforms the state Legislature passed in a special session two years ago, but he is also working on legislation.

“We have a bill that we’re working to pass that would provide a federal tax deduction for property insurance costs up to $10,000,” said Senator Scott.

A poll released last week showed Scott leading Mucarsel Powell by four points.
