NEW YORK (WABC) — The best way to watch the TCS New York City Marathon in person is by taking the subway.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the following service changes and updates for the weekend.

Verrazzano Narrows Bridge closed

MTA Bridges and Tunnels, in coordination with the New York City Police Department and subject to New York City approval, will close the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to all vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 3rd. TCS New York City Marathon. Motorists attempting to travel to Brooklyn or Staten Island via the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge should use an alternate route.

Additionally, on Saturday, November 2nd, the upper portion of the bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions starting at 11pm to prepare the road. Once the closure is in place, oversized vehicles or vehicles carrying hazardous materials will not be able to cross the bridge in either direction. The Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue exits on Staten Island will close at 3 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 and reopen around 4 p.m.

Motorists can call the Verrazzano-Narrows Marathon Traffic Hotline at (718) 692-5656 for information about road closures.

The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd will be broadcast live on WABC-TV Channel 7 starting with pre-race coverage at 7am.

Watch the race at MTA New York City Transit Authority

MTA New York City Transit’s subways and buses provide access to events from all parts of the city. Marathoners can use the MTA app or mta.info to learn more about last-minute subway and bus route changes as the race progresses.

The New York City Department of Transportation will continue to communicate with the New York Road Runners Club to share information regarding potential road closures and bus diversions. The Central Park crossing at 65th Street, 79th Street and 96th Street will be closed to traffic throughout the day, and buses will be prohibited from crossing Fifth Avenue during the race. There will be many other bus detours along the marathon route across the city.

On race day, runners heading to Staten Island by ferry early in the morning should take the 1 subway to South Ferry, the R to Whitehall Street, or the 4 to Bowling Green, then walk to the Whitehall Ferry Terminal. I’ll go. On Staten Island, shuttle buses transport runners directly from the ferry terminal to School Road at Bay Street in Staten Island.

Please note that due to planned construction, northbound C trains will operate express between Canal St and 125 St, and northbound 1 trains will operate express between 96 St and 145 St.

To ensure a smooth and safe journey for customers to and from the race, platform controllers will be located at stations around the finish area and other priority viewing points such as Queensboro Plaza 7NW and Lexington Avenue/59 Street 456NRW. To prevent crowding on the stairs and platforms of subway stations, some stairs may be designated as “exit/exit only”.

MTA offers customers multiple ways to receive real-time and planned service change information, as well as 24/7 customer support in their native language.

X.com – X.com users can follow @MTA, @NYCTSubway, @NYCTBus, @LIRR and @MetroNorth for service updates and customer service support.

WhatsApp – Passengers can chat with NYC Transit via WhatsApp for 24/7 customer assistance. With the help of Google Translate, New York City Transit staff provides real-time customer support in up to 108 languages.

511 – If you would like to contact the MTA by phone, dial 511 for information. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you can use the free 711 relay to contact the MTA at 511 through your preferred service provider.

road and bridge closures

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Pulaski Bridge (southbound), Queensboro Bridge (eastbound), and Madison Avenue Bridge (westbound) will be closed to traffic throughout the day.

Streets along the route will be closed to traffic until early afternoon. It will gradually resume as most runners reach the finish line.
